SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 18-acre eyesore on the city’s Northwest Side, that was once home to Drewry’s Brewery is another step closer to new life after years of neglect.
Phase one on the site is about 60 percent complete.
With all known environmental contaminates out.
Now, the city voted unanimously to move forward with phase 2 at Thursday’s redevelopment commission meeting.
They will invest another million dollars in phase 2 which will include demolishing the bottling house and remaining silo structures.
The city also applied for another 20-million-dollar EPA grant that would accelerate the process to phase 3 and further development for the site.
“We are hopeful that the end is in sight, certainly that federal funding would accelerate the reactivation of this site, but regardless of the federal funding decision, we continue to move forward with cleaning up the site,” said Caleb Bauer the
Executive Director of Community Investment for the City of South Bend.
The city hopes to have all structures down by the end of this year, so phase 3 can begin next construction season.
The finished site could include an extension of Muesell Grove Park and housing.
