Reminders for South Bend residents, trash bin removal and sidewalk clearance in snowy conditions

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The City of South Bend is reminding residents to move trash bins from the street on the day of collection and that residents' and businesses' sidewalks should be clear of snow and ice within 24 hours of a snowfall or ice accumulation.

City officials say trash bins left out make it hard for snowplows to clear streets.

They say bins left out could also get plowed in, making trash pickup more difficult for crews.

Officials also remind people that sidewalk clearance is the responsibility of the resident or business on the property.

Checking on elderly neighbors during snowy weather events is encouraged as well as assisting them with snow removal if possible.

If you have a fire hydrant on your property, city officials ask that you shovel around it to keep it free of snow and ice to be easily accessible for firefighters.
