Rene Lopez Alvarado convicted of July 2025 murder of 29-year-old

Rene Lopez Alvarado BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Berrien County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to ABC57 that Rene Lopez Alvarado of South Bend was convicted of First-Degree Murder and Felony Firearm.
He was originally arrested and charged with Homicide-Open Murder and Felony Firearms in connection with the July 21, 2025, death of 29-year-old Courtney Hershberger
Alvarado's sentencing is scheduled for April 27 in Niles.
On July 21, 2025, at around1:16 p.m., the Berrien County Sheriff's Office responded to Franklin Woods at 1950 S. 13th St. in Niles Township for a death investigation.
Upon police arrival, officers located Hershberger dead inside the residence.
Through investigating, officers found the death was suspicious in nature.
Alvarado was soon identified as the suspect.
