Retail sales improve

US retail sales posted better than expected results at the end of last month.
According to a government report, sales rose about a half a percent in December.
A large part of the gain came from auto sales. Car companies had their best year since 2007.
The number is important because two-thirds of the US economy is based on consumer sales.
