RHI hosts an adaptive water ski event for people with physical or intellectual disabilities
CULVER, Ind-- The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana hosted an adaptive water-skiing event on Lake Maxinkuckee for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. Many participants came out and showed their skills.
Karen Lawrence, Director of RHI Sports Program says “It’s just an amazing event. Volunteers have a great time; participants have a great time. You can’t beat it. It’s the best day of summer. “
There are two different types of skis. Some choose to use skis with outriggers that protect skiers from tipping and some use skis without the outriggers. It’s just a small ski that they can sit on, but it gives them the opportunity to perform jumps and tricks.
This event has been happening at Culver for six years, but before that the organization put on this event for over 20 years in Cicero, Indiana.
This event is for people like Emily Hizer, who was diagnosed with MS. Before her diagnosis, she participated in water skiing. Now she still can.
“I used to be a water skier so when I found out this was available with my MS ,that’s what brought me out because I wanted to get back out on the water after all these years. I love it because it gives you your freedom back so you’re back in the water and I love the waves.”
