SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Police confirm they are looking into a reported burglary in the River Park Neighborhood on Thursday.

Becky Nystrand, who lives in the 900 block of S 36th Street, says she’s missing thousands of dollars of tools she needs for her job.

Nystrand is a hairstylist of 40 years. She currently works between Salon Nouveau’s two locations in Granger and South Bend.

After work Wednesday night, Nystrand says she parked her car in her garage and locked the garage doors.

Because she works between the two locations, and she always locks up—she felt safe leaving her styling tools in the car.

But, Thursday morning she found the garage had been broken into. Nystrand says her car’s trunk and glove box were open—and all of her expensive tools were gone.

She says a bicycle from the garage was also taken.

“Without my tools I don’t have a job. 40 years of worth of building all my tools… gone. It broke my heart to be honest and it made my faith in mankind really feel like what’s going on in the world,” says Nystrand.

Nystrand estimates the taken tools amount to over $6,000. Insurance will cover it, but she has to replace them before being reimbursed and there’s a $1,000 deductible.

“I can’t earn a living without these things. It may not seem like a lot to some people, but, to me it’s a lot of money and I have nothing to work with,” says Nystrand.

Nystrand says while the incident initially made her feel cynical, there’s a silver lining.

Her coworkers at Salon Nouveau are sharing what they have so she can keep working.

“There are still good people and that is what I’m trying to focus on. I have girls that are awesome and I don’t even know how they get through those doors in the morning with hearts as big as they have,” says Nystrand.

If you have any information about this incident, you’re asked to contact the South Bend Police Department.
