SBFD rescues dog, two cats, a rabbit, and six snakes from housefire Monday afternoon

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department reports crews responded to a residential fire in the 4600 block of Ridgeway Street just before 12:30 p.m., Monday.

Firefighters arrived to find smoky conditions inside a small home.

Fire officials say the fire was confined to the kitchen and was brought under control in about five minutes.

Fire crews searched the home and were able to rescue a dog, two cats, a rabbit, and six snakes.

One dog was found to be dead according to the report.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents.

Just before 3 p.m., SBFD responded to a shed fire in the 2200 block of Beverly Place.

The initial call indicated leaves had been burning and the fire spread to a nearby shed.

Leaf burning is not allowed within city limits, fire officials said.
