UPDATE: Two of six juveniles charged as adults for firearm offenses

UPDATE: Court documents from St. Joseph County reveal two of the six juveniles will be charged as adults for firearm offenses.

Seventeen-year-old Ty'Mon Spears is charged with Dangerous Possession of a Firearm, a Level 5 Felony, and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm, a Misdemeanor, with 17-year-old Brandon Fleming also being charged with Dangerous Possession of a Firearm, a Level 5 Felony, and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm, a Misdemeanor.

Spears' initial hearing is set for Sept. 23. Fleming's due in court on Sept. 22.

ORIGINAL STORY: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Police Department reports officers with their Strategic Force Unit were investigating information regarding individuals illegally possessing firearms in the city on Monday.

Police say their investigation led them to a location in the 1700 block of S. Brookfield Street.

Authorities say while attempting to contact the individuals at the location, several people fled the scene while some remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

SFU ended up detaining six suspects between the ages of 16 and 17.

SFU officers were granted and subsequently executed a search warrant on the Brookfield residence.

The report states three firearms, including one equipped with a machine gun conversion device, otherwise known as a switch.

Police say another firearm was found outside the home.

Four of the juveniles were taken to the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary charges related to firearm possession.

The other two juveniles were taken to the Juvenile Justice Center on preliminary charges related to firearm possession.

This remains an ongoing investigation by the SBPD SFU.
