SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Police officers, city leaders, and the families of the fallen gathered Fri. evening at the South Bend Police Department (SBPD) to hold the annual Fallen Officer Memorial Service.
Since the formation of the South Bend Police Department in 1831, 15 men have lost their lives on duty, as well as one St. Joseph County Officer.
Hosted by FOP Lodges #36 and #155, the ceremony is intended to remember those lives as National Police Week comes to a close.
A candle was lit for each life, and a flower was passed out by retired officers to each family of a fallen officer.
“To each of our local survivors, we extend our deepest gratitude for your profound sacrifice and selflessness in sharing your loved ones with us. Their sacrifices have left an indelible mark on our hearts, inspiring us to honor their memories forever,” said Sheriff Bill Redman of St. Joseph County.
