ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to warn residents of a phone scam in which scammers will appear on people’s caller ID under the sheriff office’s name and number and request payment from the recipients of these calls.
Police say the scammers will give a number of reasons for people to believe that they owe money to the sheriff’s office in the form of gift cards.
This scam was first reported in July in hopes of lowering the number of future victims.
Officials want to remind everyone that the police will never contact you in this fashion and will never ask for gift card information.
If you have any information on scammers using this method, call the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office at 574-891-2100.
