DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- At approximately 4:50 p.m. on Friday, Pokagon Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) units were dispatched to a home in the 58000 block of Klumbis Road in Dowagiac that was engulfed in smoke.

Mutual aid was dispatched for Dowagiac Fire Department ladder 240 with an additional full response from the Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD).

Arriving units found nothing visible from the outside of the residence that showed evidence of igniting the fire; upon entering the home, a room and its contents were discovered to be in flames. The fire was quickly extinguished.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be from electrical failure.

Several cats and dogs were evacuated from the home and appear to be alright, although a pet Parakeet succumbed to the fire.
