Snow day decisions ahead for Michiana school districts

SOUTH BEND, Ind.— Several local school districts dismissed students early or adjusted schedules Thursday as winter weather moved into the area.

New Prairie Schools joined Michigan City and LaPorte in calling early dismissals, while other districts, including South Bend, remained in session but canceled after school activities.

Thursday could be the first snow day for students in 2026.

District leaders say safety remains the top priority as superintendents weigh road conditions, bus transportation, and forecasts when deciding whether to close or delay school Thursday.

With an early start to winter already using up many of the state-allotted asynchronous e-learning days, additional closures could soon mean adding days to the end of the school year for some districts.
