South Bend Common Council will meet tonight to discuss Kelly’s Pub and fill Community Police Review Board
SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. --The South Bend Common Council will hear some major agenda items today including a resolution to purchase Kelly's Pub.
The city staff believe purchasing the bar will be beneficial for four primary reasons, according to the meeting agenda.
The pub has experienced several safety issues in recent years and was the site of a double shooting in January and a mass shooting in 2019.
The bar has been on the market for a while, and the city claims that by making the purchase, they will be able to guarantee that a future owner will be able to secure the property more effectively.
The commercial area around the pub has seen business growth over the past decade, aiming to be a key property in the city's redevelopment portfolio.
The city is now planning to upgrade Mishawaka Avenue intersection's streetscape and says it's better to have control over Kelly's during construction.
City officials will also meet tonight to discuss the appointment of nine candidates to the South Bend Police Citizen Review Board.
The board is set to include proposing policy changes and reviewing independent investigations into complaints made against South Bend Police Department officers.
By reviewing police misconduct, conducting their own investigations, and recommending disciplinary actions, the review board's members hope to increase public confidence in law enforcement and their sense of accountability.
Today’s committee meeting will be starting at 3 PM and the council meeting will be taking place at 7 PM.
