SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- The South Bend Cubs held a movie night and fireworks show for Independence Day at Four Winds Field on Saturday. The Pixar movies Wreck-It Ralph and Toy Story were shown followed by a 15 minute fireworks display.
"My wife wanted to come out, my kids hadn’t seen fireworks since, not last year at least," said John Lowery, who went to the event. "We wanted to bring our kids out to enjoy the fireworks display."
Cubs owner, Joe Hart, says the fireworks show is a South Bend staple he couldn't wait to put on again after a year of social distancing and quarantining. However, this is the first time in many years that the Cubs have actually been playing on the road during the holiday weekend.
"It’s just another fun day for us to be open," said Hart. "We have a great venue, a great opportunity to have the community come out, that’s what Four Winds Field is here for and that’s what we’re going to do."
Lowery says not having a large gathering last year for the holiday really put in perspective how much he appreciates the ability to gather.
"We took things for granted, previously before COVID," said Lowery. "I might have even been like ‘Oh I’d rather just stay in and watch some Netflix,’ but after a year and a half of Netflix and chill, what a relief it is to hang out with some friends."
