NOW: South Bend looking forward to Kennedy Park Pool amid extreme heat

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – As temperatures rise, so does the desire for a public pool in South Bend. With the city facing another pool-less summer, families are turning to splash pads to beat the heat, but big changes are just around the corner.

Next spring, South Bend Venues Parks and Arts (SBVPA) is set to break ground on a brand new pool at Kennedy Park. The $15 million project, funded in part by a federal grant, hopes to include a four-lane lap pool with obstacles and increased accessibility.

Along with the new pool, the project includes a full makeover of Kennedy Park.

Initial renderings that have not yet been finalized show possible plans for new walking paths, upgraded pavilions, and new basketball and pickleball courts.

Until construction begins, the existing Kennedy Park water playground remains open and is busier than ever.

Families took advantage of nine splash pads spread throughout South Bend to stay cool in the intense summer heat and humidity in the meantime Thursday.

SBVPA Recreational Director Macey Hanna says the department is excited about what the project will bring to the community and emphasizes that the space is being designed for all ages to enjoy.

“We are looking forward to that project and just what it can mean and bring for the residents here in South Bend,” said Hanna.

Before finalizing designs, the city plans to host community meetings to gather feedback.

A specific opening date for the new pool has not yet been set.
