South Bend man charged with Murder of 35-year-old woman over weekend
Dewayne Allen Shurn Sr. SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced on Monday a 47-year-old South Bend man has been charged with Murder following a weekend homicide investigation.
Court documents reveal Dewayne Allen Shurn Sr. has been charged with Murder, a Felony, with Habitual Offender Enhancement.
On Saturday around 7:30 a.m., officers with the South Bend Police Department responded to a call for a welfare check in the 2200 block of Kemble Avenue.
Police arrived on scene to find Shurn and 35-year-old Jamecia Moffitt inside a vehicle in the alleyway.
The report states Moffitt had suffered catastrophic injuries to her face and head.
Moffitt was taken to the hospital where it was determined she suffered irreversible brain damage and wouldn't live. Her organ donation has been scheduled.
After reviewing the investigation, the prosecutor's office formally charged Shurn.
The sentencing range for Murder carries a sentence of 45 to 65 years.
The Habitual Offender Enhancement carries an additional sentence of eight to 20 years.
Shurn was arraigned Monday and is currently being held in the St. Joseph County Jail without bond.
Shurn's next court date is Mar. 10.
Per the case's probable cause affidavit, SBPD officers stated Moffitt's injuries appeared intentionally inflicted.
Authorities say the vehicle, a Hyundai SUV, had gotten stuck in the mud in the alley, but didn’t appear to have been in a crash.
Documents reveal Shurn was uninjured but did have blood on his clothing along with several clumps of hair.
When officers spoke with Shurn, he told them he'd been at Four Winds Casino earlier in the night with Moffitt. While there, Shurn told police the duo met up with two other friends. Shurn then claimed he didn’t know how Moffitt received her injuries.
Witnesses were interviewed and said they saw the SUV stuck in the mud and approached it, being concerned the occupants could need help.
Witnesses stated they approached from the passenger side and knocked three times before the driver, Shurn, moved. Witnesses asked if he was ok or needed help, to which the driver said no.
That's when they left and called police.
Another witness said they heard the SUV revving its engine around 5:30 a.m. and saw the vehicle stuck in the alley. The witness said the SUV is associated with Moffitt.
The witness said the revving noise lasted 10 to 15 minutes, before things went silent for about an hour or so.
The witness then heard the other witnesses approaching the SUV and ask if the driver was ok.
The witness then said they heard Shurn yell, "Hey, get the f*** up," multiple times.
Authorities later obtained and executed a search warrant on the SUV.
Police found Moffitt’s purse behind the driver's seat and while looking in the trunk a portfolio of artwork was discovered.
Some of the art appeared to have a nude woman tied up.
Police also found a folder with paperwork for Shurn. Attached to the folder was a piece of paper which read, “90% of the people who end up dead, dont realize they dealing with a killer til its too late! (otherwise, they might still be alive) # be mindful.”
