South Bend man in hospital after housefire
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A man in his late twenties is recovering at Memorial Hospital after he suffered smoke inhalation.
A fire broke out at a church on the corner of South Street and Carroll Street in South Bend just after 5 p.m. Firefighters found the man at the side entrance of the church, just inside the first floor.
Crews had the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
There were several ambulances called out to the scene because the victim said there were four other people in the building, but firefighters searched the entire building and found no one.
"We did two or three searches on each floor because we had a report from the individual that there were four other people then two other people then he was the only one," said fire chief Kevin Kolber.
A cause of the fire has not been determined.
