South Bend police step up patrols to keep students safe

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Thousands of South Bend kids dusted off their backpacks and headed back to the classroom.

South Bend police officers also stepped up patrols in school zones to help keep the kids safe.

The program is part of an awareness campaign to let drivers know that school is back in session and that everyone needs to slow down.

"Be aware of your surroundings, be aware of kids all over running around," Capt. Terry Young of the South Bend Police Department said. "A lot are excited to get to school. So, they're not paying as much attention."

Police say drivers need to be extra careful, especially before and after school.
