South Bend Schools Chief Financial Officer, Assistant Superintendent leaving
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Community School Corporation announced its Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Superintendent Kareemah Fowler has decided to depart from the district.
SBCSC officials say Fowler joined the district in 2019 following her service as the South Bend City Clerk.
Officials say during her tenure, Fowler proved herself to be an integral and innovative leader.
Fowler spearheaded the successful referendum campaign, which addressed a $14 million property tax gap and led to the approval of $220 million in additional funding for the schools.
Officials say this funding played a pivotal role in preventing staff attrition, increasing teacher salaries, and facilitating the district's right-sizing.
SBCSC officials also say it's allowed for the enhancement of educational programs and the optimization of district operations.
"Coming to South Bend schools, I knew it would be difficult, but I came to serve the community, a place that I call home. I couldn't anticipate challenges such as COVID and unforeseen events during my tenure, but this has been the most rewarding work. Leaving South Bend schools, I believe it is in good hands," Fowler said.
Fowler's last day with the district will be September 30.
Ahnaf Tahmid, the district's budget director, will be her successor.
SBCSC Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings stated, "Kareemah has been instrumental in successfully passing our $220 million referendum, ensuring we honored every promise made to our community. Her transition to a new opportunity is a natural progression, and while we will miss her, she will always have a home in South Bend Schools. I wish her all the best in her future endeavors."
Of her future plans, Fowler has not disclosed details but said she looks forward to spending more time with her family and contributing to her community.
SBCSC officials say Fowler has been an integral part of the district's success.
