South Bend's East Race a vital training tool for emergency responders

Firefighters and police officers from the Midwest and Canada met up at the East Raceway in South Bend for water rescue training.

The river is 2,000 feet long, making it the perfect place for them to get the proper training.

Bob Means, a South Bend firefighter and river rescue instructor, says this training is vital to their jobs.

“The more we train and prepare for these events, the better we can perform them,” says Means.

Rob Kriter, a firefighter from Niagara Falls, Canada, says this course helps him become better prepared for when he goes home.

“It's challenging and definitely tiring,” says Kriter.
