St. Joseph County launches payment plan for homeowners who owe property taxes
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – A September 1 deadline has been set for a COVID-19 Payment Plan Program for property owners who are facing economic hardships.
This payment program provides time extensions and graduated payment plans for residents who risk losing their homes due to the inability to pay property taxes.
“This is our best shot, within the law, at getting some help to people who are struggling. The pandemic restrictions are lifting and the economy is slowly starting to come back, so the hope is that by getting people on a payment plan and giving them some more time and flexibility to get their balances paid, we can help residents keep their homes,” said Tim Swager, St. Joseph County Treasurer.
The program is only available to properties that claim a valid Homestead Deduction and are scheduled for the County’s Tax Sale on September 7-9.
If you’re a homeowner experiencing economic hardships and need a payment plan, please email [email protected] to schedule an appointment or call the St. Joseph County Treasurer’s Office at 574-235-9539.
The deadline to apply to the COVID-19 Payment Plan Program and be removed from the Certified Tax Sale list is September 1.
