St Joseph County performs live fire training at South Bend International Airport.

The St. Joseph County Airport Authority Department of Public Safety performed live fire training on Tuesday at the South Bend International Airport.

The FAA under FAR Part 139 mandates fire safety training for any entity that focus on Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting.

The department has twelve members who work together to put out the live fires.

Chief of the department Mike Ornat stressed the importance of the training, stating “The FAA fire training with live burns is conducted annually to ensure our team is timely, effective and proficient in putting out large flammable liquid fuel fires,”

Ornat also said “Safety is held to the highest standard across all sectors at the airport. Training procedures like this help our team stay equipped and alert for our traveling public.”

Training was done from 8:00 a.m. until Noon.
