SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- St. Margaret’s House is celebrating 31 years of providing assistance to women and children living in economic poverty in the South Bend community.

They are also celebrating a retirement and the welcoming of a new face to the organization.

The celebration dinner and auction is taking place at the Gillespie Center at the Hilton Garden Inn.

The event kicks off at 6:00 p.m. this evening with the welcoming of the new executive director of St. Margaret’s house while also celebrating the beginning of Kathy Schneider’s retirement after she dedicated 30 years of committed service.

“I’m the executive director for one more day and tonight I'll hand the mantle over to Katie Elliot, our new executive director…we’re so excited to be able to celebrate 30 years of opening doors of opportunity for women and children,” Schneider said.

The day center has been able to keep their doors open during the pandemic but they did lose about 100 volunteers since the pandemic started.

Before the pandemic, the day center had more than 150 weekly volunteers and right now they are only seeing about 30-40 volunteers.

If you make the move to go and volunteer, you can choose from a variety of tasks from helping at the reception desks, cooking in the kitchen, working directly with guests, sorting donations, handing out meals and more.
