Starke County inmates turning over a new leaf
Starke County, Ind. – The Starke County Sheriff’s Office served the community in a special way today.
Sheriff Bill Dulin, Jail Warden Phill Cherry, Jail Commander Nathan Caudill, and Maintnence Director Tony Maldice Sr. teamed up with low level inmates to deliver bags of vegetables to immobilized or physically impeded residents of Oak Valley Apartments.
According to officials the inmates are actively involved in the care of the jail garden.
The bags included cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and snap peas.
The Sheriff’s Office states there were 35 bags delivered to elderly residents that may not get out of their homes on a regular basis.
This is just one example of work programs that allow inmates to give back to the community in a positive way.
Officials say they intend to go to other assisted living centers within the county to provide the same service in the future as long as the garden produces.
