State releases federal school accountability ratings

The Indiana Department of Education released the federal school accountability ratings from the last school year. Of the 208 local schools included, 8 received 'exceeds expectations,' 85 received 'meets expectations,' 85 received 'approaches expectations' and 30 received 'does not meet expectations.'
In the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation had five schools that exceeded expectations. The district overall received high marks in almost every category.
Three of the high schools in the South Bend Community School Corporation - Clay, Adams and Riley, earned 'approaching expectations' ratings. Washington High School did not meet expectations.
The state says the federal ranking is just one method of grading schools for their accountability.
The latest state rankings are expected to come out next year.
“I am proud of the work Indiana schools are doing to academically prepare our children for life beyond high school,” said State Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick. “To better serve schools for future successes, however, it is important we develop a single modernized state-legislated accountability system that is fair, accurate, and transparent. Our kids, schools, teachers, and parents deserve it.”
