ELKHART, Ind. -- There is a new push to change the mascot for Elkhart High School to the "Charging Blazers."
The proposed name is a combination of the Elkhart Memorial and Elkhart Central mascots.
The district voted for the new mascot to be the "Lions" last year, named after the Mangy Lion trophy that the two schools have battled over for years.
Two Elkhart Memorial students started a petition, which already has more than 500 signatures, saying they should be represented by more than just a wooden trophy.
"Mr. B is just iconic and just so much history involved in the mascot. Champion Charger from Memorial is beloved from the community as well. There's just no better way of making the new school's mascot,” said Elkhart Central student Patrick Yeakey.
Students will be collecting signatures for the petition until Feb. 21.
Then, with the help of Elkhart Central principal Frank Serge, they plan to present it to the school board.
