MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Documents from La Porte Superior Court reveal a 33-year-old man entered a not guilty plea in court Tuesday after being charged in connection to a Halloween attack which left one man in a coma.

Documents state Joshua Finai allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend around 8 a.m. on Halloween.

Finai was charged with Aggravated Battery - posing a substantial risk of death, a Level 3 Felony, and Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony.

Finai's next court hearing is set for Feb. 5, 2026.

The Michigan City Police Department reports officers responded to a home in the 200 block of Emma Street on Halloween morning for a reported Battery incident.

Officers arrived to find a male victim with a laceration on his forehead and was in and out of consciousness.

Authorities were informed the victim had been struck in the head by a wooden baseball bat.

Police on scene noted there was a broken baseball bat just inside the home.

First responder rendered basic medical aid to the victim and applied pressure to the wound while waiting for EMS.

Witnesses at the home told police Finai had struck the victim with the bat. The victim was identified as the new boyfriend of Finai's ex-girlfriend.

The victim was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital where he was placed in a medically induced coma.

A witness told police Finai had approached her while she was smoking a cigarette outside the home. The witness said he asked to use the restroom and entered the home.

That's when the witness said Finai saw his ex-girlfriend sleeping on the floor next to the victim who was also asleep.

The witness said that's when Finai became angry and grabbed the baseball bat in the living room before allegedly striking the victim around 15 times.

The homeowner then said to have stepped between the two men and told Finai police were on the way.

Another witness stated she was asleep in another room when she heard screaming and awoke to head to the living room where she said Finai was striking the victim with the bat.

A witness stated prior to Finai leaving the scene in his truck, he said "I got something coming for you."
