JONES, Mich. -- Despite temperatures reaching 59 degrees twice in the month of December, and a daily average eight degrees higher than the norm, Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboard opened up the slopes for the first time this season on Saturday.
The ideal temperatures for snowmaking have rarely been reached throughout the 2023-2024 winter season so far.
Lower 20's and teens are the perfect conditions for Swiss valley, but they've still managed to cover both their beginner and intermediate hills with more than enough artificially produced snow to kick off the season properly.
The crew running Swiss Valley is particularly excited for the next seven to 10 days with more natural snowfall expected and a decrease in temperatures.
Snowboarders and skiers alike have been waiting months for opening day, which organizers say has been trending more towards late December to early January with each passing year.
Swiss Valley expects to be able to open up their largest slope on Sunday with the decline in temperatures and natural snowfall paving the way.
