The famous 7-foot apple pie takes over Apple Festival

NAPPANEE, Ind. -- The Nappanee Apple Festival just got a little more exciting and the anticipation of the famous 7-foot Apple pie is finally over after the pie has made its way out of the oven.

The apple pie was placed in the oven yesterday at 375 degrees. After an hour, the oven is turned off and the pie rests for a total of 17 hours before it can be served.

The first pie was baked in 1976, and it has been a tradition ever since at the Nappanee Apple Festival.

After baking 100 pounds of dough and using 400 pounds of apples the tasty dessert is made into the masterpiece everyone has anticipated to see.

Since 11 a.m., the pie has been sliced and served to guests attending the festival.

Mim Hartman, is the chief baker responsible for making this famous pie for the last 16 years and shares why she loves baking the pie every year.

“I love it because of the anticipation of making the largest and the prettiest pie in the state of Indiana and I love to meet people, " said Hartman. I am a people person, and I love to meet new people and find out where you're from and be impressed that this is the first time you’ve seen such a big pie”

The baker did not complete this project alone, the pie is so big that it requires a team of 5-6 people just to get the pie in and outside of the oven.

The apple pie is an abnormal size and requires a big oven to bake it, and they had just the oven in mind.

The pie is being sold where the big oven was used to bake the pie at Don Carlo’s Bar and Grill located at 108 W. Market St, Nappanee, IN 46650.

Over 150 slices have already been served so be sure to make your way to the festival while the pie lasts, the pie is expected to be finished by 3 p.m. tomorrow.
