Tire safety in winter weather

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Snow, nails, and potholes just might be your tires worst enemies.  Mechanics say the three can make for a pretty lethal combination.

"The ice melts and creates these big holes in the roads and its hard to miss them and it's really hard on the tires and rims." explained Dave Rose, manager of Discount Tire in Mishawaka.

Mechanics at the Discount Tire on Grape Road in Mishawaka say in the winter they repair about thirty tires a day.

"When that snow comes back on the ground, people do realize as they start sliding through intersections and stuff, they realize how bad their tires are and that's when they come in." said Rose.

Tire experts say its best to buy snow tires, but if you cannot do that, it is important to keep the right amount of air in your tires.

If your tire is low, it runs hot and breaks down the rubber inside, which can cause it to blow.

Mechanics say tire safety is not something that should be taken lightly, especially in the winter.
