Tracking broken records and looking ahead to cooler temperatures
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- While not many charts were topped with extreme heat, August 2023 proved to have heat that will withstand the passage of time.
On August 24, south bend recorded its warmest low ever in conjunction with the highest heat index ever recorded at south bend regional airport, feeling like 115 degrees in the late afternoon.
At one point early in the morning of August 24, the dewpoint was at an oppressively tropical 81 degrees.
This Wednesday became the second warmest August 23 in recorded history as well.
The national weather service office of Northern Indiana confirmed the warmest low temperature earlier Friday morning.
Abnormally warm events are usually followed by abnormally cooler ones as the atmosphere attempts to restabilize itself constantly.
After this past week's heat, temperatures are expected to have a better chance at being below our "normal" heading into September.
Cooler air from the north and northwest will flow into the Great Lakes region and South Bend over the next several days, reducing dewpoints substantially.
