Two juveniles arrested for dangerous possession of a firearm

ELKHART, Ind. -- Two juveniles were arrested for dangerous possession of a firearm after police were called to investigate reports of gunfire, according to Elkhart Police.

Saturday afternoon an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of H Lane for the sound of gunfire.

When officers arrived, they found a gray Chevy Impala with four men inside the vehicle and standing behind the vehicle, against the trunk.

While speaking with the men, the officer reported smelling the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The man who was leaning against the trunk, a 17-year-old, was taken into custody for dangerous possession of a firearm and was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.

The four people inside the car were detained. Inside the vehicle, police said they found marijuana and a handgun.

A 15-year-old male was released to a parent. His case will be referred to the prosecutor’s office for possession of marijuana, police said.

The other two occupants of the vehicle were released from the scene.
