Unemployment sits higher in some Michiana counties
SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Department of Workforce Development released June’s unemployment rates.
Some local counties are trending above the state average of 3.7 percent. Saint Joseph County is sitting at 4.1 percent. While this is higher than the state average, some experts say that is not a bad thing.
Carol O. Roger’s, Indiana Business Research Director says, “anything that is closer to five percent unemployment is actually good news for employers.”
South Bend Regional Chamber Director, Alyson Herzig, says compared to the past four years, employment is seeing record numbers.
Right now, the county is focusing on children in school and recent graduates.
The aim is to educate these students on jobs that are the future here. Herzig says they are aiming to “find those connection points for when they are ready to enter the workforce.”
