UPDATE: 3-year-old shot moved to Riley Children's Hospital

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- We have an update on the condition of a boy who accidentally shot himself over the weekend on the 700-block of S. 27th Street in South Bend.

Thankfully, he is expected to survive. The 3-year-old was flown to Riley Children's Hospital because of the severity of the injuries. The wounds are not life threatening.

The Family Violence Unit and the Department of Child Services are investigating the matter separately.

There is a possibility of charges, but none have been filed at this time. A fill investigation will be conducted first.

The firearm was a 9mm handgun, kept in the safe next to the sofa.

The mother was sleeping on the couch at the time.
