UPDATE: Colorado shooting suspect failed key test in PhD program

AURORA, Colo. -- The accused killer in the Colorado movie theater shooting last Friday failed an oral exam ABC News has learned.

About a month before the shootings, accused killer James Holmes took a key test as part of his PhD program at the University of Colorado.

After failing the exam, he purchased a high-powered rifle.

Experts said that failing the test might have triggered a sickness.

"All of those things could actually make a dormant schizophrenia come out, and come out relatively quickly," Dr. Marisa Randazzo said.

Police investigators said that Holmes fired like an expert marksman once inside the theater. They are now trying to figure out where he may have been trained.
