Vacant motel unlawfully occupied catches fire Tuesday afternoon

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Fire Department reports crews responded to a fire around 4:53 p.m., Tuesday, at Christy’s Motel on US 20, after receiving a call indicating the building was engulfed.

Fire officials say the structure was designated as a vacant building but was unlawfully occupied at the time of the fire, including the room where the fire originated

Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes and confirmed two rooms were fully involved.

Crews knocked down the main fire by 5 p.m.

Firefighters conducted a search of all rooms to ensure the fire hadn't spread after observing smoke traveling through the attic space.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
