Volunteers cleaning up potential new park space April 27

River Park Volunteers

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- In celebration of Earth Month, a group of local citizens is getting together this Saturday morning to cleanup a hidden wetland tucked away in the River Park neighborhood.

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on April 27, a group of roughly ten volunteers plans to come together at S. 36th Street, north of Marshall Avenue where they can gain access on foot to an approximately five-acre plot of city-owned land southeast of 35th Street and E. Washington.

The group hopes that the property will become one of the city's next parks.

City Code Enforcement will provide equipment and supplies for the cleanup out of their “Tend the Bend” trailer.

"Though the work may be done by few, the action on the 27th is a beginning. South Bend is about to recover a rich haven for wildlife unknown to most of its citizens," said a member of the group, Brian Will. "This story will continue, season by season, as individuals and groups work to recover a natural treasure we almost lost.
