CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- The Cass County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to a home in the 11000 block of Born Street in Newberg Township for a welfare check around 8 a.m., Thursday.

After getting no answer at the door, deputies observed a man on the kitchen floor through the window.

When deputies attempted to enter the home, they were stopped by several dogs.

Cass County Animal Control was then called to assist with removing the dogs.

Upon entry, deputies located a woman with injuries.

The woman was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital.

The man on the kitchen floor was found to be dead.

The death was deemed suspicious, and the investigation is ongoing.

The names are being withheld pending next of kin notification.
