Witness recalls fatal hit and run crash

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Police Department is investigating a hit and run accident that killed the driver of a moped.

Police say the driver of an older model red Ford F-150 pickup struck a moped with two people on it around midnight at the intersection of Calvert and Franklin.

“It was a pretty rough thing to watch, it was pretty, pretty rough,” said a witness who did not want to be identified.

The two people on the moped were a 56-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman. The moped was hit from behind.

“We just seen this truck drive past. These ridiculous sparks were under his car, and we had no clue what it was. I’ve never seen nothing like it. There were just sparks everywhere,” the witness said.

Police say the truck did not stop. The truck dragged the victim and his moped more than a block down the road.

“There were sparks everywhere and we heard some lady screaming. It was a bad situation," the witness said.

The woman on the back of the moped was thrown off.

She was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The male driver died.
