Arrest made in murders of Abby Williams and Libby German in Delphi
DELPHI, Ind. - Indiana State Police have arrested a suspect in the murders of Abby Williams and Libby German in Delphi. The announcement was made at a press conference Monday morning.
“I am proud to report to you that today, actually last Friday, was the day. And that an arrest has been made," said Doug Carter, Indiana State Police Superintendent.
The suspect, Richard Allen of Delphi, was arrested on October 26. He was formally charged with two counts of murder on October 28 and entered a plea of not guilty.
The court records in the case have been sealed, so no details about the murders were released during the press conference.
Williams and German were found dead on February 14, 2017, one day after they went walking on a trail at the Monon High Bridge.
Their deaths shocked the small community and made national headlines.
The case went nearly six years without an arrest. But behind the scenes, investigators with the Delphi double murder team never stopped searching for the killer.
“I really believe that Abby and Libby would be proud of you, for standing strong in the face of immense pressure and perpetual criticism," Carter said.
Carroll County Prosecutor Nick McLeland said it was their hard work that led to an arrest. He said Allen worked at the local CVS Pharmacy on Main Street.
McLeland said the court documents were sealed to protect the integrity of the investigation, which is still ongoing.
“That will become evident to you at some point, and it will be released, but right now, it is not that day," McLeland said.
Family members and those who have been following the case are thankful for the arrest.
“I just know there’s another job, another hill for us to climb, ahead of us. But we’re up for the challenge and we’re gonna keep after it. We’re not gonna stop," Libby's grandfather Mike Patty said.
“It’s bittersweet. It’s nice to be one step closer to closure, but nothing’s ever truly going to bring closure to these girls," Curt Marcucci said.
Allen is being held without bond at the White County Jail.
Police said they are still investigating and are still asking for any tips.
