NOW: Camp Millhouse calls on community to help renovate cabins

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It's Camp Millhouse's last week of the summer season and they're making sure to end on a high note.

Since 1937, Camp Millhouse has been a nonprofit organization for people with disabilities from ages 7 to 75 plus, making it one of the very few overnight camps of its kind in the Midwest.

Each week is filled with different activities from arts and crafts to music and sports. Every Thursday, the camp hosts a dance with tonight being the camp's prom.

Once the camp season is officially over, Executive Director Diana Breden recommends families start enrolling for the next summer season now as spots fill up quickly.

The camp is also trying to raise more than $500,000 to renovate the aging cabins with HVAC, insulation, plumbing, and safe wiring.

The camp runs solely on community support and now, more than ever, they need their help.

"Without camp, these campers would not have somewhere to go and have the independence to learn new skills, to make new friends, make friends of their own, to be with people who accept them for who they are. That is the beautiful thing at Camp Millhouse, is that everyone, campers and staff, can just be who they are," Breden said.

People interested in donating can mail checks to 25600 Kelly Road in South Bend or donate online.
