Another warm winter means snow is once again behind schedule
NILES, Mich. -- The name of the woman who was killed in a home invasion Sunday afternoon has been released by the Berrien County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies were called to 1429 Lawndale Avenue at 5:56 p.m. by a 49-year-old man. He said unknown subjects entered the residence and shot his wife, 55-year-old Carla Jean Lewis, in the basement.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspects fled the scene in Lewis' 2008 Mazda CX9 with a Michigan license plate CMY 3721.
If you have any information on the whereabouts of the vehicle, please contact the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office at (269) 983-7141. The occupants are believed to be armed and dangerous.
An autopsy on Lewis was scheduled for Monday in Kalamazoo.
Police said during the investigation, they determined 49-year-old John Benton Lewis was not incompliance with the medical marijuana act and was taken to jail for the violation.
