BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich.—A 19-year-old was killed in a shooting outside of a Benton Harbor gas station late Tuesday night, according to the Benton Charter Township Police Department.
Around 11 p.m. on July 21, officers with the Benton Township Police Department were called to the Phillips 66 Gas Station at 1117 Pipestone Road in Benton Harbor for reports of a shooting victim in the parking lot.
At the scene, officers learned the victim had been taken to the hospital by a “Good Samaritan,” who arrived at the gas station after the shooting.
Police were told at the hospital that the victim, identified as Taj Carter, 19, of Benton Township, had been pronounced deceased after sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Benton Township Police Department.
During their investigation, police learned that an unknown person or multiple people had driven through the parking lot of the gas station in a red four door sedan and fired gun shots, which struck and killed Carter, reports said.
The vehicle left the gas station and as of Thursday morning, police have not located any suspects.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Benton Township Police Department Detective Bureau at 269-925-1135 or Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
