Dowagiac police mourn loss of two K9s

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- The Dowagiac Police Department announced the deaths of a retired K9 unit and a current K9 unit.

Over the weekend, police say retired K9 Tole passed away with his handler, DC Roman, by his side.

Tole joined the DPD in July 2016 where he served until his November 2022 retirement.

Tole was certified in apprehension, tracking, narcotics, and handler protection.

Police added that Tole was also a "certified good boy."

DPD K9 Cash had been battling cancer for the past few months. Police say a large mass was found on his neck and he was taken the vet for treatment options.

Wednesday night, police say Cash passed away while in the arms his handler, also DC Roman.

Cash was a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois and in his fourth year of law with DPD.

Cash was certified in obedience, tracking, article and building searches, narcotics, and handler protection.

The department says Cash had a success rate of 89 percent.

DPD added he was also a certified member of the "Good Boy Club."
