Food Bank providing kids with food backpacks

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Local children in need will now have a new way to get food on the weekends.

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana's Food for Kids program is helping elementary school students by providing them with backpacks full of food.

The backpacks will be given out each Friday.

Inside the backpack is a nutritious, kid-friendly meal called a fun pack.

It is important because one in four children in the United States lives in Hunger.

"They don't have food when they go home on the weekends so we're able to provide the food for them to go home so when they come to school on Monday morning they are ready  to go, they've had something to it," said Milt Lee, CEO of Food Bank of Northern Indiana.

The food for kids program is funded by personal donations, sponsoships and grants.
