ELKHART, Ind. -- First Presbyterian Church in Elkhart announced it's offering a free Ukrainian Easter Egg Decorating workshop, also known as pysanky.

The free workshop will take place March 15, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the church's Journey Café located at 200 E. Beardsley Ave.

Church officials say the event began as a way not only to learn this traditional art form but to support the people of Ukraine following Russia's invasion and war that started in 2022.

Rev. Dr. Sally Wicks, pastor of First Presbyterian, has taught pysanky for many years.

Offerings will be accepted to help the Ukrainian people through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

“The egg decorating is done on raw eggs with metal-tipped styluses warmed by candle flame and dipped in beeswax,” Wicks said.

Organizers say space is limited, so the church asks those planning to attend to call First Presbyterian at 574-264-3109 before the event to register or register online.

Wicks said, “Designs are drawn on the eggs and dipped in brilliant-colored dyes to create a beautiful pysanka. Men and women, children and adults, can enjoy creating pysanky. I taught this ancient craft to my three sons at a young age.”
