Michiana is trending in the right direction, dropping from Tuesday's very unhealthy 245 on the Air Quality Index to 184 on Wednesday.
We're continuing to trend in the right direction, with most of the smoke being pushed out late tonight into early Friday morning.
Many found it harder to breathe yesterday than Tuesday, even though there was a lesser concentration of smoke.
Wednesday featured a larger temperature inversion aloft, creating a stable layer that essentially puts a "cap" on any rising motion that would lift the smoke above most human activity.
With the cap in place, the smoke resided near the surface, causing a milkier, denser day.
Some smoke will remain over the weekend, but nothing close to what we saw earlier this week.
Rain-cooled air and wind today through Saturday will wedge the smoke up and out of Michiana, clearing out most of the skies for the holiday weekend.
Expect conditions to improve from within the next several hours.
