NOW: Kelby Love mural in Elkhart crumbles, city officials hope to recreate it

ELKHART, Ind. - A beloved artwork dedicated to ending gun violence in Elkhart finally came down, with city officials still aiming to recreate the mural.

Friday, crews began removing the bricks that make up the Kelby Love mural on the corner of Prairie and Main Streets.

Viewers sent ABC57 photos of the on-going demolition.

Most of the wall is now gone.

Workers were sifting through the rubble to find painted bricks to save for anyone who wants to claim a piece of history.

The city will announce when residents can grab a brick, now a part of the mural's legacy.

The powerful peace mural was created back in the 90ss by the late Kelby Love in response to a wave of deadly shootings that claimed the lives of more than 40 teens in just two years.

The city says the mural may be recreated in another spot in the future.

ABC57 will keep you updated on what happens next.
