SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame backup quarterback Kenny Minchey plans to enter the transfer portal when the window opens from Jan. 2 through Jan. 16. While the news is big, it is not a total surprise.
Minchey has two years of eligibility left. He spent this season as the backup after losing the quarterback battle to CJ Carr in fall camp. Carr started all 12 games this season and played very well. Because of that, his chances of starting again next year are very high.
Minchey appeared in six games this season for the Irish. He completed 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards. He also ran for 84 yards and scored one touchdown. Over the last two seasons, the former four-star recruit rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries. Even with limited playing time, he made the most of his chances.
Earlier this year, Minchey talked about how seriously he takes his role, even as a backup.
“When Sam was here, he told me a story about playing super early in his career. You never know how college football is going to go, with the transfer portal and with injuries, they happen every single day. So if you’re a three or a four and not preparing like you’re the starter – you’ve got something wrong.”
Minchey now has the chance to go somewhere he can start right away and compete for wins. Many also respected how he handled his time at Notre Dame as a teammate and player.
