LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports a suspect turned herself in on Friday after being named a suspect in a theft investigation regarding the Kingsbury Parent Teacher Organization account and associated monies.

Authorities say in early January, a school resource officer assigned to the La Porte Community School Corporation was informed by a district administrator of concerns regarding the PTO's account.

The Kingsbury PTO is an independent educational nonprofit organization, of which the suspect, 46-year-old Kerry M. Surowiec of La Porte, is the treasurer.

The report states an investigation was initiated following several unauthorized transactions from the PTO account.

Authorities say investigators gather and document information regarding the case.

The findings were then given to the La Porte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on Jan. 26 for review.

Probable cause was found and Surowiec was charged with one count of Theft, a Level 6 Felony, and an arrest warrant was issued on Wednesday.

Surowiec surrendered to authorities Friday at the La Porte County Jail.

Surowiec was released from custody after a cash bond was posted on her behalf.
